GREELEY — The Greeley Historic Preservation Commission discussed planning for Historic Preservation Month and whether to present awards in May, weighing venue, scheduling and staffing constraints.
Staff told the commission that if awards are to be presented they should post the application packet next month with an early-April deadline so commissioners can review nominations in April and present awards at the May event. Staff noted scheduling conflicts to consider: UNC graduation is May 9 and HistoryFest at Centennial Village takes place the week of May 11.
Commissioners discussed potential venues. The Creative Arts Center (part of the recently opened Creative Arts District at the Olmut Macy Building) was a leading option if the district does not charge rent; commissioners asked staff to identify backup venues such as the armory space, Wernoco or the Syntex space in case rental costs make the Creative Arts Center infeasible. One commissioner emphasized the commission has no event budget and said a backup is necessary if the chosen location charges a fee.
Staff also reviewed related upcoming City events. They said the city will host a City Hall farewell event on Friday, Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with a flag-lowering ceremony and refreshments and a public open house (Saturday, 3–5 p.m.). Staff reported that the demolition permit for City Hall had not been issued and that an architectural documentation volunteer will fly in to perform interior 3-D photography on March 7 to preserve the building in digital form.
The commission agreed to revisit decisions at the March 2 meeting and asked for up to two volunteers to assist staff with event planning. No formal action was taken on award criteria or venue selection during the meeting.
