Dubois County approves bridge contracts and outlines $1.1 million paving plan

The Dubois County Commissioners on March 16 approved contracts and funding requests the highway department said are intended to address winter damage and aging infrastructure.
Highway Engineer Levi Leffert presented a $409,367.36 contract with Blankenberger Brothers, Inc. for rehabilitation of Bridge 78 (CR 600 W over the Patoka River), which the board approved. Leffert also presented Addendum No. 1 to the American Structurepoint agreement — an additional $5,000 to revise plans after contractor feedback; the addendum was approved. A $157,874.40 contract with C&R Construction for deck overlays on Bridges 107 and 240 was approved, and Leffert said Bridge 119 (Club Road, about 0.5 miles north of SR 264) requires superstructure replacement and is expected to be closed in late March or early April to complete work before the paving project begins on or after June 1.
Highway Superintendent Donnie Lueken told the board the department is addressing soft and bad spots caused by a hard winter and aging chip seals and reminded residents to be cautious when "MEN WORKING" signs are displayed. Lueken previewed a 2026 paving and maintenance plan that would potentially hot-mix 12 roads at an estimated cost of about $1.1 million and rejuvenate 11 roads at an estimated $228,870; he said the final schedule of hot mix, chip seal overlays, Rejuvtec, and patches will be presented in April after the department checks road bases.
The board approved a request to advertise an additional appropriation in the Solid Waste Sticker Fund for $1,000 for workers' compensation and $269,000 for equipment and approved advertising for an $8,000 Highway Fund appropriation for Samsara maintenance. Commissioners also approved a motion allowing INDOT to use Taylor Hollow Road, Mentor Road South and Anderson Valley Road as an unofficial detour while SR 145 is closed April 13–Aug. 31, 2026, for maintenance; INDOT will post official detour signs on state roads.
Leffert said a Community Crossings Matching Grant (CCMG 2026-01) additional appropriation of $902,417 has been received from INDOT and will be advertised. Vialytics-related funding of $30,000 was noted for consideration at the April 6 meeting.
The actions taken at the meeting were motions duly seconded and carried; where the record notes a unanimous carriage, it is specified in the minutes.
