Augusta City Council approves rezoning, conditional-use permit and housing incentive district

The Augusta City Council on Aug. 20 approved a package of land‑use and financing measures, including a rezoning for a tow company, a conditional‑use permit for on‑site storage containers, an amendment to a facility‑use agreement and the creation of a Reinvestment Housing Incentive District (RHID) for the Red Bud Ridge development.

The council voted to reclassify about 5.4 acres at 529 North Walnut from C‑3 (general commercial) to I‑1 (industrial) to allow a towing business with limited outdoor impound storage and indoor storage within an existing building. Staff told the council the planning commission had recommended approval by a 6–0 vote and noted the tow operator provides services for Augusta Public Safety, which staff said supports emergency response efficiency.
