Spotsylvania board unanimously adopts legislative priorities, urges implementation support for telehealth

At the Oct. 27 work session the Spotsylvania County School Board reviewed and approved its legislative priorities for the coming cycle, endorsing advocacy for an updated K—2 funding formula, prioritizing funding distribution to higher-need schools, support for teacher recruitment and retention, enhanced wellness and safety funding (including telehealth implementation), and measures to expand broadband access.
Dr. Medawar moved to approve the priorities as amended after board discussion; the motion passed 4-0. Board members asked staff to clarify language around measuring student need beyond the free-and-reduced-lunch metric and to expand the telehealth priority to request not only funding but guidance and implementation supports from the state. "Fully fund the implementation of counseling and mental health services for students as required by the telehealth law," a board member suggested as refined language.
The priorities also asked the General Assembly to consider recommendations from the 2023 JLARC study on the K—2 funding formula and to fund work-based learning, special education staffing and other targeted programs. Staff said they would clean up the edits and circulate the final language to the board.
