Board approves federal grants, textbook and several personnel actions after closed session

On federal grants, the board voted unanimously (6–0) to approve submission of Title II (teacher/principal development and math specialist support; presented as roughly $650,000) and Title III (English‑learner supports; presented as roughly $280,000) grant applications to the state. Jamie Maleneck, director of professional learning and federal programs, explained how the funds would support math specialists, tuition reimbursement, ALP work and ELL coaches.
The board also approved an AP Human Geography textbook adoption recommended by staff; the estimated purchase cost listed in the packet was $50,043 (motion passed 6–0). The board recognized May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month (motion passed 6–0).
After a closed session for personnel and student‑record matters under the Code of Virginia, the board certified the closed meeting and then took three actions in open session:
• Approved an HR packet (motion passed 5–1).
• Voted to recommend to the Virginia Board of Education that it revoke the teaching license of an employee whose circumstances the board considered in closed session (motion passed 5–0 with one abstention recorded).
• Voted to uphold the director of safety's original decision in a student dispute, with the motion passing 4–2.
Board members stressed the confidentiality of closed‑session details and provided only the formal outcomes in open session. One board member said she would request the superintendent and board clerk to review board governance policy related to professional development and travel allowances for future guidance.
