Contractors for the Wayne County Courthouse HVAC project raised concerns at the July 9 Board of Supervisors meeting about liquidated damages and the project schedule as county offices prepare to move back into the building later this month.
Representatives from GTG Construction and Moorman HVAC told supervisors the project is underway but that liquidated damages have been assessed beginning July 1. Moorman asked whether those damages would continue after county offices relocate back to the courthouse; Chair Lance Lange said the liquidated-damages discussion was between the contractors and GTG Construction and that he would work with GTG’s representative, Jess Reynolds, to address the issue.
Supervisors and contractors confirmed county offices would begin moving back to the courthouse on Thursday, July 18, and emphasized that the first floor needs to be completed before the move. The board scheduled a walk-through of the courthouse after the meeting to inspect the work and outstanding items.
Why it matters: Liquidated damages can affect contractor payments and project closeout; with an imminent office move date, the board signaled urgency in verifying first-floor readiness and resolving any contract payment or penalty questions.
What’s next: Chair Lange said he would follow up with GTG Construction and contractor representatives to clarify liquidated-damages responsibilities and to ensure the project timeline supports the scheduled July 18 office move.
The walk-through was set to follow the meeting; no formal vote on the HVAC contract or damages was recorded during the session.
