The Buckingham County Board of Supervisors on March 26 unanimously directed county staff to monitor filings and proceedings related to the proposed Valley Link 765-kW power line and to prepare a resolution stating the county’s position. The motion was made by Supervisor Carter S. Allen and seconded by Supervisor Dennis H. Davis Jr.
Supervisor Carter S. Allen said constituents have raised concerns about routing and health effects and urged the board not to wait until its April 20 meeting to act. "I think it’s important as a Board to adopt a resolution in order to take a stance and take a position on this," Allen said, adding the proposal includes "3 or 4" routes that would cross the county and that staff should present a recommended resolution and any strategic options.
Chairman Joe N. Chambers Jr. called the motion to the floor and conducted the roll-call vote; Michael E. Palmore, participating by phone, voted "yes." Chambers announced the motion carried with seven yes votes. The board’s action instructs the County Administrator and County Attorney, with appropriate staff, to monitor developments, identify legal, procedural and strategic options — including participation in proceedings before the Virginia State Corporation Commission — and to engage outside professionals as appropriate when developing a recommendation.
The motion’s text directs staff to develop and present the recommendation to the board in the form of a resolution so the board can take further action. With no additional business, Chairman Chambers adjourned the special called meeting.
