Kanosh schedules public hearing on trimmed Wildland‑Urban Interface ordinance after council review

Summary
Council agreed to post a public hearing (Wednesday the 13th at 6:30 p.m.) to explain a proposed Wildland‑Urban Interface ordinance that removes map‑based 'hot zone' building‑code burdens while keeping the town’s agreement with the state; staff recommended outreach and a town meeting prior to final vote.
The Kanosh Town Council set a public hearing to take public input on a proposed Wildland‑Urban Interface (WUI) ordinance the council hopes to adopt with fewer prescriptive building‑code requirements.
Mayor Wenda Crabb told council members staff prepared an ordinance that removes the map‑driven “hot zone” prescriptions — measures that would have forced enclosed porches and other construction changes in areas designated as higher wildfire risk — while preserving the town’s agreement with the state on WUI cooperation.
"Strips all of that out and it just basically says that we'll have this agreement with Louie, but we will not have any kind of special building codes to go with it," the mayor said, explaining the draft aims to avoid imposing additional construction requirements on residents where council members judged the risk to be low.
Council members emphasized the need for public outreach and clarity on the consequences of adopting or not adopting the measure. One councilor urged staff to explain both the content of the proposed ordinance and the risks of not adopting a form of WUI compliance at a public meeting before the council’s next regular meeting.
Council agreed to a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday the 13th (town notice will call it a public hearing for the Utah Wildland‑Urban Interface) and asked staff to invite the state technical contact (Jess) to attend if possible and to prepare clear materials and maps for the public meeting.
Next steps: staff to post the hearing notice, prepare explanatory materials including what adopting the agreement would and would not require of property owners, and return the ordinance for council action after the public input session.
