Summary
Judith Velasco reported the Verdugo Job Center provided no‑cost skills training to about 4,880 clients since July, hosted a health‑care job fair with roughly 19 employers and 330 attendees, and said the center is seeking additional grant support to assist workers from recent large layoffs (JPL notices).
Judith Velasco, workforce administrator, presented the workforce development section activity report and described the Verdugo Job Center's services and recent events.
Velasco said the center, primarily federally funded under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), has provided short‑term vocational skills training to approximately 4,880 clients since July. She highlighted a recent health‑care job fair held at Pacific that drew about 19 employers and roughly 330 community attendees and said employers included regional health providers.
Velasco described recent large layoffs in the region and the center's response: she cited WARN notices from JPL that included layoffs of 520 and later 547 positions and said the local board has applied for additional funding to serve affected workers with training and credentialing. She also reported a local manufacturing business closure that affected about 20 employees; the center is reaching out to assist those workers.
The report noted a $357,000 Caltrans grant awarded to Glendale Youth Alliance to implement community beautification and safety projects; GYA will operate a summer youth employment program for ages 14–24. Velasco encouraged residents to apply for youth employment and said the job center continues to build employer relationships and credentialing programs with community colleges and industry partners.
Velasco said the Department of Labor's recent policy shifts have encouraged a focus on registered apprenticeships and workforce AI training; she noted federal guidance can affect local priorities and funding use.
The commission thanked staff and asked for follow-up on potential scholarship and training resources for students; Velasco said she would provide additional information.
