Board President Mr. Hoback called the meeting to order at 7:53 p.m. and the board approved minutes from the Sept. 16 meeting. The board then approved multiple payment lists and the September financial report; the approved fund totals included $1,606,767.90 (General Fund list dated Sept. 30), $297,162.45 (General Fund list dated Oct. 21), $2,302.98 (Activity Fund list dated Oct. 21) and $67,688.95 (Cafeteria Fund list dated Oct. 21). The motions were moved by Mr. Matthews and seconded by Mr. Woodske and carried unanimously.
The board appointed Deborah King of Huntington Bank as the district treasurer “at no cost to the district,” after a motion by Mrs. Hogue and a second by Mr. Matthews. The board also approved a contract with Cottrill Arbutina to perform independent audit services for the year ending June 30, 2013: $19,615 for the independent audit and $3,365 for the single-unit federal audit.
In a separate vote the board increased its contribution to the Beaver Area Memorial Library to $30,000 for the 2013–2014 budget year. The motions to approve the audit contract and library contribution were each seconded and approved unanimously.
On personnel matters the board granted a Family Medical Leave Act leave to Danielle Carpenter, fourth-grade special education teacher at Dutch Ridge Elementary, and granted tenure to Erin Boyd, a Spanish teacher at the secondary campus. The board accepted the resignation of Ryan Miller as a hall monitor and approved the employment of Tyler Burns as hall monitor (remuneration $80 per day) and Rachel Walden as a special education teaching assistant ($8.50 per hour). Betsey Sheasley was appointed Middle School Yearbook Advisor for the 2013–2014 school year ($600).
The board ratified several overnight field trips and extracurricular requests, including trips to the McKeever Environmental Learning Center and the Antietam Illumination, and approved one student and one adult to attend All‑State Chorus in Hershey. The board also authorized the administration to employ an elementary teacher for the 2013–2014 school year at a salary not to exceed $50,000, subject to final board approval at the November meeting.
The meeting packet included administrative reports filed with the business office. The board canceled the November work session and confirmed the next regular voting session for Nov. 18, 2013. The meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.
