Calhoun County commissioners authorize two highway safety grant applications and approve $1.2 million in claims

At its Aug. 3 meeting the Calhoun County Board of Commissioners authorized the Office of the Sheriff to submit two Highway Safety grant applications and approved county claims totaling $1,202,353.23.
County Administrator/Controller Greg Purcell described a $25,000 Highway Safety grant that would fund deputies’ overtime for coordinated enforcement of the Click It or Ticket and You Drink & Drive, You Lose programs, operated cooperatively with the Albion Department of Public Safety and the Marshall Police Department. The board approved the Office of the Sheriff’s electronic submission of that application (motion by Comr. Segal, supported by Comr. Moore). Comr. Strowbridge abstained from the roll-call vote, saying the department with which he is employed would benefit from the funds; the tally was six yes, one abstain and the motion carried.
The board also authorized submission of a $17,500 Highway Safety grant application for a youth alcohol enforcement program (motion by Comr. Segal, supported by Comr. Moore); that motion passed unanimously.
Separately, the board approved payment of the county’s claims lists: $293,674.91 for the week of July 19 and $908,678.32 for the week of July 25 (motion by Comr. Bolger, support Comr. Solis); the roll-call vote was unanimous.
Other consent-agenda communications were acknowledged and placed on file, including several resolutions from other Michigan counties and a notice of a Battle Creek brownfield public hearing.
