Commissioners review draft immigration cooperation resolution after community concerns raised

Houghton County commissioners discussed a draft resolution concerning cooperation with federal immigration authorities after community groups raised concerns.
Sheriff Saaranen told the board two groups — the local Republican Party and Keweenaw Invisible — had expressed worries about U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and that he had met with representatives of both groups. He said he would prepare a statement and that both groups planned to submit correspondence to the board.
Commissioner Roy Britz said each group would be given an opportunity to address the board; Commissioner Glenn Anderson noted current jail population figures during the conversation and said some inmates may be released following sentencing. Administrator Rheault was asked to be informed of any withdrawals of pending resolutions.
No resolution was adopted during the work session; Sheriff Saaranen will bring a prepared statement to the next meeting and the board will receive written input from the groups.
