Summary
The board voted unanimously to repurpose Alexander Elementary as an operations facility at the end of the 2025–26 school year and approved attendant attendance-zone changes and student-reassignment steps, citing long-term enrollment decline and projected budget impacts.
The Duncanville Independent School District board voted unanimously April 20 to transition Alexander Elementary from instructional use to an operations facility at the end of the 2025–26 school year and to implement an attendance rezoning plan to reassign affected students.
Superintendent Dr. Corey and Dr. Graham presented the strategic transition plan, which the administration said responds to a long-term enrollment decline in the district. Dr. Graham told trustees the district has “lost over 800 students, which equates to almost $7,100,000,” and said continuing to operate under‑utilized campuses spreads resources thinner across all schools.
The plan presented updated attendance zones that redistribute Alexander students across three neighboring campuses, preserve feeder-pathway alignment where possible and offer Alexander families the option to apply to Central. Dr. Graham emphasized the board’s responsibility to “maximize every dollar” and to ensure equitable distribution of resources, describing the rezoning as a measure to maintain healthy campus utilization across the district.
Trustees pressed for safeguards for the Alexander property. One trustee asked whether the district intended to change the building’s name; Dr. Graham and staff said the campus would retain the Alexander name and that they do not plan structural alterations that would preclude returning the site to instructional use should enrollment recover. Trustees also raised concerns about splitting friend groups and transportation; Dr. Graham noted that transfer applications and transportation planning would be part of implementation.
The board formally moved to approve the transition and the rezoning plan and to authorize necessary staff actions for student reassignment and staff transitions. The motion passed by voice vote, recorded as unanimous.
Next steps outlined in the presentation include focused communication to families, staff-transition planning and district-led support to ensure a smooth transition for students affected by rezoning. The board did not set a separate follow-up date in the public discussion; staff said implementation tasks would proceed after tonight’s approval.
