Fremont youth group urges lowering municipal voting age to 16 during charter discussions

During the public‑comment portion of the April 13 meeting, Sofia Mohammed, speaking for the Fremont Youth Initiative, asked the Charter Advisory Committee to continue exploring language that would permit 16‑ and 17‑year‑olds to vote in local school‑board elections if included in the city charter. Mohammed said the students have been in contact with the Fremont Unified School District Board and expect formal letters of support.
Mohammed told the committee that early civic engagement ‘‘would provide a meaningful way for student voices to be representative while also encouraging early civic engagement.’’ She acknowledged that the committee’s charter work may extend beyond the committee’s immediate scope but said she wanted to raise the issue for consideration and further study.
Chair and staff accepted the comment as part of the record and indicated the committee could review any supporting legal analysis and letters the youth group provides before deciding whether to include youth‑voting language in proposed charter drafts.
