Lisa Mayer, who identified herself as a Hampshire resident of 28 years, told the board she was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer on Oct. 20, 2016, and has been undergoing continuous treatment since. “I have been in treatment every day for the last 9 years, and I will continue treatment until I die from stage 4 breast cancer, which has no cure,” Mayer said, asking residents to visit mediviver.org to learn more and donate.
The proclamation, read by the board chair, summarized population-level statistics and described the metastatic breast cancer awareness tricolor ribbon (teal, green and pink), noting metastatic disease occurs when cancer spreads to other parts of the body and highlighted national incidence and mortality figures cited by the proclamation.
Board members thanked Mayer and posed for a group photo after her remarks. The proclamation does not create a new local program or funding commitment; it is a formal recognition encouraging public awareness and participation.
