At the Feb. 24 Antioch City Council meeting, residents and local organizations used public comment to press the council on pedestrian safety, persistent illegal dumping in specific intersections, and the loss of local businesses.
Debbie Blasier, representing the Downtown Antioch Association, outlined downtown efforts to increase foot traffic, thanked city staff for collaboration on safety and cleanliness, described planned beautification projects funded by the city's civic enhancement funds and invited the council to a ribbon-cutting the next day for a new vintage/antiques shop. Residents spoke about personal crime incidents, recurring trash piles at 6th and A, and the sense that daily cleanups create a permissive environment for illegal dumping. Public Works staff and police were directed to follow up on enforcement and camera options.
Council adopted proclamations recognizing March as American Red Cross Month and honoring Foundation MEGA (Mind Elevated Game Accelerated) for youth football, cheer and mentorship programs serving more than 300 Antioch children. Mike Lance of the Red Cross and Tamara Johnson of Foundation MEGA thanked the council and described local programs and service statistics.
Speakers including arts leaders urged the council to see arts programming as part of prevention and youth engagement strategies. Councilmembers acknowledged the range of public concerns and said related agenda items and upcoming planning work will address pedestrian safety, economic development and the general plan update.
