The Woburn School Committee voted on March 25 to approve a pilot expanding paying-peer options in the districts Early Childhood Program (ECP) and to adopt new tuition tiers that reflect added hours for peers.
Student Services described the pilot as an operational change within the existing special-education program structure intended to increase inclusion opportunities and help the district meet compliance needs. Currently, peers can attend four half days per week at $3,300 per year. The pilot adds two paying-peer options: a five-day half-day option (peers attend the previously-scheduled fifth day for half days) at $4,300 per year, and a five-day model that runs from 08:30 to 1:00 (a longer day) at $6,300 per year.
Committee members asked whether scholarships or reduced-cost spots exist; administration confirmed that financial-aid/at-risk spots and processes are described in the preschool materials distributed to families. The committee emphasized that the pilot does not change the special-education programs scope for eligible students; it changes only peer attendance patterns and the tuition charged for paying peers who use additional hours.
The committee approved the recommendation by voice vote. Officials said the pilot and pricing will be reviewed annually and adjusted based on enrollment, inclusion outcomes and compliance with special-education team decisions.
