Summary
After interviewing two candidates, the City Council indicated support for Michael Aguilar’s appointment to the Springfield History Museum advisory committee and asked staff to place confirmation on the next regular meeting agenda. Aguilar highlighted museum experience and a possible Union Pacific grant for a railroad exhibit.
Michael Aguilar interviewed for one of three vacancies on the Springfield History Museum advisory committee and drew support from a majority of councilors, who asked staff to place his confirmation on the next regular meeting agenda. Aguilar said he moved to Springfield recently from Salt Lake City to work in the nonprofit sector and cited previous museum work as a reason to join the advisory committee. He recommended pursuing an exhibit on the railroad’s local history and noted Union Pacific is soliciting community‑ties grants that could provide up to about $30,000 in funding.
Maddie McGraw, the museum curator who introduced the applicants, said the museum had three vacancies as of Dec. 31, 2025; one former member reapplied and was directly reappointed, and two remaining openings required interviews. Councilors who spoke during the selection discussion praised Aguilar’s fundraising experience, community engagement and fresh perspective. Councilor Buck said Aguilar’s “experience and enthusiasm” made him the council’s inclination; Councilor Stout said he was “a huge rail fan” and supported Aguilar’s railroad exhibit idea. The mayor asked staff to schedule formal confirmation at the next regular meeting so the council could finalize the appointment.
The interview was treated as an advisory appointment; councilors noted one other applicant was not present. The council did not take a final roll‑call vote at the work session, instead directing staff to return with the item for confirmation on the regular agenda.
