Sleepy Hollow board approves Elementary School 5K route and street closure

Organizers Christine Gukwa, a Sleepy Hollow resident, and Catherine Charlton, a first-grade teacher at Sleepy Hollow Elementary, told trustees the run is a PTC fundraiser intended to involve families and students and that they will coordinate closures with police and fire, supply porta-potties and recruit roughly 25–30 volunteers to staff turns on the course. "We will work with the police department for closures, work with the fire station for a potential ambulance being there for the day of event," Gukwa said.
Trustees discussed parking and turf damage if vehicles were allowed on the grass and asked organizers to provide neighborhood notice to residents. Organizers said they plan to use a running-app registration, offer both a 5K and a shorter half-mile fun run for children, and seek modest entry fees so families can participate. Trustee comments emphasized safety: one trustee recommended fully closing the route to traffic because of liability concerns.
After discussion, Trustee Maguire moved to approve the 5K route and Trustee Thomas seconded; a roll-call vote approved the motion. The board recorded the approval and asked organizers to finalize any remaining logistical details with village staff and emergency services before the event.
The most recent step is the village approval of the route and street closure; organizers said they will proceed with publicity and volunteer recruitment and will provide required documentation to village staff.
