The Susanville City Council approved co‑sponsorship of the Lassen Sportsman's Club junior fishing derby at Memorial Park and added direction that staff develop a risk‑transfer agreement and require event insurance. Wade Workman, speaking for the sportsmen’s club, described the event’s history and turnout — he said last year’s derby drew 277 participants and the club stocked pools with roughly 500 pounds of fish.
City staff advised the council that special events carry liability and the city participates in a pooled insurance program (SCORE) that covers up to $1 million; staff recommended that, when the city partners with another entity, a standard risk‑transfer agreement be executed and that the club obtain event insurance to cover its liability. Staff also suggested the city could cover a modest premium for this year if needed and noted Councilmember Brown had offered discretionary funds.
Council moved, seconded and voted to approve co‑sponsorship with the risk‑transfer and insurance requirements; the motion carried unanimously.
