Summary
The county jail reported an average daily population increase with 42 inmates on hand (33 from Scott County, 9 local) and March revenue from Scott County of $36,465; administrators said billing for hospital stays and other costs is being pursued and staff have shifted food providers to manage costs.
Andrew Long provided an operations update for county detention operations at the April 21 meeting, reporting the jail was housing 42 inmates (33 from Scott County and 9 local inmates) and has seen increased bookings in recent weeks.
Long reported March revenue from Scott County of $36,465 and a fiscal-year-to-date Scott County total of $364,710; he said March had 47 bookings and that average daily population trends are being tracked to inform staffing and budgeting. "For this fiscal year, running total, 364,710," Long said when reporting revenues.
Long also noted challenges billing for an inmate who was hospitalized at St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids; he said the county is working to have hospitals direct-bill the department of corrections or otherwise resolve invoicing for mileage, wages and medical costs attributable to county-responsible inmates.
Administrators said they have changed food providers to a lower-cost vendor and are monitoring overtime related to female inmates, who require female staff coverage and can contribute to overtime costs. The board discussed budgeting and asked staff to coordinate with auditors on funding needs for the remainder of the fiscal year.
No formal action was taken; the update was informational and included requests for continued coordination with the auditor on funding and for follow-up on hospital billing.
