The Covina City Council read a formal proclamation recognizing February as Black History Month and urged residents, businesses and community groups to participate in activities that honor African American history and contributions.
Council members presented the proclamation and the library board's president, Danae Maya, accepted it on behalf of the Covina Public Library. "At the Covina Library, our incredible city staff will be hosting a number of activities, including story times and displays honoring black leaders and authors and telling their stories," Maya said, inviting the community to visit the library for month-long programming.
Council members and staff also introduced Pietra Morris as the new manager of the Covina Public Library. Morris, who previously worked for the City of Arcadia, was welcomed by the mayor and council, and council members encouraged residents to use the library's themed programs and story times for all ages throughout the month.
The proclamation recounted historical milestones that led to a national recognition of Black History Month and emphasized the city's commitment to diversity, inclusion and education. The council did not take any additional action related to the proclamation; the item was presented and accepted during the presentations portion of the meeting.
