Council continues sidewalk vendor ad hoc, sets June 30, 2026 deadline and bimonthly updates

The Cudahy City Council voted to continue its sidewalk vendor ad hoc committee and set a firm end date of June 30, 2026, directing the group to finalize a proposal for any municipal code updates related to sidewalk vending and street funding.

Councilmember Elizabeth Alcantar Loza, who moved the motion, said the committee should develop a code update and “possibly, like, an education campaign,” and proposed bimonthly updates to council rather than the previously requested 30-day reports. The interim city manager/city clerk told the council the item had been brought at the mayor’s request and that the mayor wished to step down from the ad hoc panel to allow another council member to take the seat.

Alcantar Loza proposed the committee’s work include a finalized proposal for council consideration on edits to the municipal code concerning sidewalk vending and related street funding. A motion to continue the committee with that scope, bimonthly updates to council, and an end date of 06/30/2026 passed by voice vote.

The city staff report, referenced during the discussion, noted an existing expectation of monthly updates that staff and members said was not being fulfilled; council agreed to the bimonthly cadence as a compromise. The motion did not record a roll-call tally in the minutes provided; the council approved the motion by voice vote.

The council moved on to other business after the vote. The ad hoc’s next steps are to produce the draft code language and an implementation plan for council review by the June 30, 2026 deadline.
