The Afro Village Consortium presented a privately funded hospitality and cultural activation proposal for the 2028 Olympic window that would place an African Cultural Pavilion in Media Park and a nearby "Bahati House" sports and cultural lab.
Bridal Bahati, founder of the Bahati Foundation, framed the proposal as a temporary, city‑safe activation that would be privately financed and governed by the consortium. "This is a city‑safe, privately funded, temporary activation designed for LA28," Bahati said, describing daytime cultural programming, evening performances and partnerships with local restaurants and schools for legacy programs.
Architects and organizers emphasized governance by the consortium, security plans with professional teams and MOU arrangements with participating countries. Councilmembers across the dais praised the concept, raised questions about coordination with public spaces and asked staff to engage on feasibility, permitting, coordination with LA Metro and potential impacts on Media Park and nearby properties.
Councilmember O'Brien requested consensus for staff to begin negotiations and feasibility work; councilmembers signaled support by nodding heads. Staff will report back on permitting, security, timeline coordination and whether any city responsibilities would be required for staging and crowd management.
