Morton adopts ordinances raising bulk water and gas charges

Trustees adopted two ordinances adjusting utility charges. Director of Public Works introduced Ordinance 26-33 to amend Morton Municipal Code section 8-4-9 and set a bulk water rate at the village bulk water station (450 Detroit). The presenter said $20 per 1,000 gallons is in the "ballpark" compared with other cities and recommended a 6% increase each May to fund maintenance; trustees approved the ordinance by roll call.
The board also adopted Ordinance 26-34 to amend section 8-2-15 of the Morton Municipal Code to raise the gas markup from $0.20 to $0.21 per therm effective May 1 and to increase the markup by another $0.01 per therm on May 1, 2029. The presenter said the markup covers operation, maintenance and capital improvements and estimated the change equates to roughly a 1.5% impact on typical bills, noting over 5,500 residential accounts. The ordinance also proposed rounding up monthly service charges (residential +$1, small commercial +$15, large commercial +$25) to generate additional recurring revenue. Trustees approved the ordinance on a roll-call vote.
Officials said the measures are intended to stabilize utility revenue to support maintenance and capital projects.
