Cudahy council approves $541,046 boost for Clara Bridge lighting project

Daniela Trujillo, administrative analyst, told the council the additional money would be split evenly between Measure M and Measure R and would cover construction, staff time, construction management, inspection services and a construction contingency. "We are requesting to increase funding for the Clara Bridge Lighting Improvement Project by appropriating an additional $541,046 to be split evenly between Measure M and Measure R," Trujillo said.
Why it matters: staff said the original engineer's estimate dated from October 2020 and that construction costs have risen since then. Trujillo said the scope includes new LED lighting, structural repairs to light fittings, guardrail repairs and painting, bike-lane striping, and installation of traffic-calming measures.
Council questions focused on durability and vandalism. Council member Fuentes asked whether the budget accounts for potential vandalism and security, noting past examples of bridge fixtures being stolen in other cities. Trujillo replied that "part of the construction contract when awarded is for the contractor to maintain the project within 6 months after project completion" and that contractors are responsible for repairing vandalism within the construction area.
Funding and schedule: Trujillo said the additional appropriation would be split between Measure M and Measure R ($270,523 each) and that the city currently has over $2.4 million available in those funds. Staff recommended approving the increase to begin bid advertisement.
Outcome: The council approved the funding increase by roll call.
Next steps: staff will advertise the project for bid and return with contract awards and construction timelines once bidding is complete.
