Summary
Dr. Wechsler told the board the district is training internal restorative-practice trainers and reviewing MTSS/CST interventions, with plans to publish clearer tiered supports; discussion focused on consistency across grade levels and possible policy embedding.
At Wednesday's board meeting, Dr. Wechsler delivered the district's third equity-plan update of the year, describing training, measurement and next steps for restorative practices and multi-tiered supports.
Dr. Wechsler said a two-day restorative-practices training was held earlier this year and the district plans to designate internal trainers (Dr. Betts and Ms. Dietz were named as future trainers) who will then support broader staff training. "We'll be our internal trainers on this work," she said, noting the goal of pulling teachers from each building to build capacity and to reduce reliance on external consultants.
The presentation included an overview of a CST (child study team) and MTSS review meant to clarify tiered interventions (behavioral, academic and mental-health supports) and to create an internal audit of interventions. Dr. Wechsler said the district intends to synthesize what belongs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 and present public-facing documentation so parents can see the supports available to their children.
Board members pressed for consistency, asking how restorative practices will look at K— vs. secondary levels. Dr. Wechsler said some practices will be individualized by grade band and recommended embedding a district vision into policy once internal capacity exists. "Our goal originally was to embed it in policy," she said, while signaling a cautious roll-out to ensure capacity for implementation.
Administrators also described use of discipline dashboards and climate-assessment data to monitor disproportionality and to guide future training and policy recommendations. No formal policy change was adopted during the meeting; Dr. Wechsler said draft policy language and additional data will be shared in future meetings.
