Mecklenburg schools launches StopFinder bus-tracking app, staff report early adoption

The Mecklenburg County Public Schools transportation team on Monday introduced StopFinder, a new bus-tracking app intended to give parents real-time updates about school buses.
Tammy Moore, identified by the board as the developer of the tool, said in a presentation that “2,800 accounts have been created in StopFinder for bus riders” and that the district had 650 active subscribers as of the meeting, with 200 signing up that day. Moore described that figure as roughly “23% of our bus riders currently using the app,” and said staff are continuing to work with the district’s student information system (Infinite Campus) to add secondary contacts and resolve onboarding issues.
Moore demonstrated core features and described use cases: live alerts when a bus is delayed, notifications when a replacement bus is assigned after a breakdown, and a configurable notification radius so families can set how near a bus must be before receiving a push notice. Board members asked whether the app could be used for field trips and for families with shared custody; Moore said staff would look into field trip functionality and confirmed work is underway to enable additional contacts per student beyond the primary email.
Board members and attendees praised the rollout and encouraged parents to accept invitation emails and share the app with caregivers. The district said it produced a short how-to video for the public web page and that transportation staff will continue communications to increase adoption.
The board did not take formal action on the StopFinder item; the presentation was for information and questions.
