School board approves interim District 1 appointment and petitions for special election

The Mecklenburg County Public Schools board on Monday approved a resolution making an interim appointment to the District 1 seat vacated by the resignation of Mr. Palmer and ratified a petition asking the circuit court to set a special election for November 2026.
Board attorney explained that the interim appointment will remain in place until the special election, and that staff had already filed paperwork with the circuit court to meet statutory deadlines. The attorney described the filings as necessary to “hit the required deadline by law to request the writ of election.”
The motions were moved and seconded (interim-appointment motion: Ms. Garner moved, Ms. Coleman seconded; petition motion: Ms. Coleman moved, Mr. Edwards seconded) and passed by unanimous roll call. The roll call recorded yes votes from Mrs. Garner, Mrs. Coleman, Mr. Rose, Mrs. Cheney, Mr. Arnold, Mr. Allgood, Mr. Edwards and Mr. Winter.
Board members also set a Feb. 9 special meeting to interview District 1 candidates and to receive public comment. The clerk reminded anyone interested in serving in District 1 to contact the board clerk for instructions on submitting interest.
The board’s action followed procedural briefing from the attorney; no substantive debate on candidates occurred at the meeting. The board adjourned after routine remarks and reminders about upcoming dates, including SOEI statements due Feb. 2 and the regular meeting on Feb. 16.
