Board names Jason Smith next superintendent and approves multiple personnel hires

On a motion by Vice Chair Steve Sallee and seconded by Patricia Edwards (recorded "all members voting aye"), the board approved the following hires and coaching appointments: Tara Alvarez, cook (effective Dec. 1, 2025); Eric Biddinger, non-stipend track coach, Gate City High School (25–26 season); Kimberly Fleenor, non-stipend track coach, Gate City High School (25–26 season); Stacey Schwaber, Health Services Coordinator, Head Start (effective Dec. 1, 2025); Taylor Hobbs, teacher (effective Dec. 8, 2025); Kendal Jones, middle school softball coach, GCHS/MS (25–26 season); Sarah Thompson, non-stipend softball coach, GCHS (25–26 season); Josh Dockery, non-stipend boys' basketball coach, RCHS (25–26 season). The substitute list was subsequently approved by motion made by Chair David Templeton and seconded by Vice Chair Steve Sallee with unanimous aye votes.
The appointment and personnel approvals were recorded as unanimous in the minutes. The minutes note the board's appreciation for Superintendent John Ferguson and extend best wishes to him upon his retirement; board members also offered holiday greetings and recognized local athletic event cooperation between schools.
