At its March 24 meeting the Webster Groves Special Business District Advisory Commission reviewed annual reports, discussed bench sponsorship and banner timing, and heard a city update about the municipal budget schedule and upcoming elections.
The chair presented the annual report materials and city staff (Speaker 5, Scott) said the city will begin budget presentations on April 14 and that two council seats are up for election on April 6. Staff also noted a special council meeting would follow to begin the budget process.
Members discussed streetscape elements: Speaker 5 and others described the sponsored-bench program, estimating about 50 sponsored benches citywide; the cost for sponsoring a new bench was cited at roughly $2,500 (which covers the bench and plaque), while re-sponsoring or refurbishing an existing bench might cost about $1,000. Commissioners discussed lower-cost alternatives—buying replacement slats and reattaching them—to refresh benches without full replacement.
Speaker 4 also announced a business-education-coalition coffee April 16 at the recreation center featuring Pat Kelly of the St. Louis Municipal League, who will discuss potential impacts if the state moves to tax services.
Why it matters: the budget timeline and bench sponsorship costs affect what projects the commission can support and how it prioritizes streetscape improvements. With budget presentations scheduled in mid-April, commission liaison communication to council is the channel to request additional funds.
The commission adjourned and set its next meeting for April 20.
