Board recognizes JROTC and several state-champion student-athletes

The Cobb County School Board opened its Jan. 22 voting session with recognitions of student achievement and community partnerships.
Sherry Hill introduced the Osborne High School JROTC Raider competition teams and said both the boys and girls teams won the state Raider championship at the Georgia Military Academy in Milledgeville; it was the first time both teams brought home the state title in the same year. Hill named Army JROTC instructor Master Sergeant Joseph Collins, Principal Dr. Troy Jones and CTAE coordinator Jessica Whitley as present for the recognition.
Hill also recognized Ayesha Davis, mentor teacher from South Cobb High School, and student Annabella Alvarado for placing first in the Youth Across America HOPE film competition; Hill said the winning film will be featured on the PBS series Hope Givers and a monetary prize will be awarded. Aislyn Dunn of Pope High School was recognized as the Class 5A girls individual cross-country state champion; Hill noted this was her first individual state title and marked her sixth combined cross-country and track state championship overall.
The board also recognized the Pope High School girls cross-country team for back-to-back Class 5A state championships and the Pope High girls 5A flag football team for winning the GHSA Class 5A state championship; Hill listed several student-athletes and coaches who stood for recognition.
The recognitions concluded and the board proceeded to public comment rules and business.
