Cobb County school board approves charter, extends superintendent's contract and OKs property sale

At the meeting the board voted 6 in favor with 1 abstention to approve the charter school petition for Power Public Schools, which the superintendent recommended for an August 2027 opening. Mr. Floresta, who returned to the dais to recap the application, said the district regarded the petition as "one of the best applications" seen in recent years and recommended approval.
The board also extended Superintendent Mr. Ragsdale's contract, moving the contract term from Feb. 12, 2026, to Feb. 11, 2029. The motion carried on a roll call recorded as five in favor and two opposed.
The board affirmed two student-discipline appeal decisions brought out of executive session. A motion to affirm the hearing decision in student-discipline appeal No. 9 was made and seconded and approved by the board; a separate motion to affirm appeal No. 8 likewise passed after a second.
Separately, the board voted unanimously to approve a real-estate agreement authorizing the surplus and sale of two properties at 2570 and 2618 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta (Cobb County) to A O A Properties Holding, Inc. for $4,260,000. The approval included related agreements allowing the district to retain control of two telecommunications leases on the property after closing.
Earlier in the meeting the human-resources personnel report was presented following executive session; the administration recommended approval of employment actions and identified two principal-level retirements with effective dates (Debbie Tennyson, Kinkade Elementary, retirement effective July 1, 2026; Dr. Joseph Woodruff, Director, Applied Learning and Design, retirement effective June 1, 2026). The board approved the personnel recommendations on a recorded voice vote showing seven in favor and none opposed.
The board chair closed the voting session after the consent and action items. The meeting adjourned with no further business.
