Kewanee Council approves grant-funded fire engine purchase; city to cover small local share

The Kewanee City Council on Dec. 11 approved Bill 23-69 authorizing the mayor, city manager, fire chief and city clerk to execute procurement and disclosure documents to buy a new fire engine.
Fire Chief Welgat told the council the engine will be purchased with a grant and “the City is responsible for a small portion of the total cost.” Mr. Landon of Legacy Alexis congratulated the city on receiving the grant. Councilmember Komnick moved approval, Councilmember Faber seconded, and the measure passed 5-0. Welgat said it should take about 18 months to obtain the apparatus.
Why it matters: Replacing aging apparatus can affect emergency response and maintenance costs; the council’s action begins a procurement process that will culminate in a multi-department contract. The council recorded no dissent and provided time for a brief public acknowledgment of the grant.
