Maywood trustees approve $717,076.92 in expenditures, legal payments and 2015 water rate ordinance

The Village of Maywood Board of Trustees approved $717,076.92 in expenditures and several vendor payments at its Nov. 5 regular meeting, including two invoices from the law firm Klein, Thorpe & Jenkins and an ordinance adjusting water and sewer rates for 2015.
Trustee A. Jaycox moved and Trustee M. Lightford seconded approval of Warrant List No. 200379 for expenditures through Oct. 30, 2014, totaling $717,076.92; the motion passed with all present voting aye. During discussion Trustee C. Ealey-Cross questioned several line items, and department staff and Acting Village Manager David Myers said they would verify entries such as an HVAC repair, media charges and cement work.
The board approved a corrected payment to North East Multi-Regional Training for the period July 1, 2014–July 1, 2015 in the amount of $6,300.00 after staff and the village attorney confirmed the correct figure.
Two separate payments to Klein, Thorpe & Jenkins were approved. A retainer invoice for $11,335.00 was approved after Attorney Michael Jurusik stated the firm operates under an at-will monthly agreement and a Letter of Engagement with prior approvals. A second invoice dated Oct. 24, 2014 for $22,498.11 was approved over the objection of Trustee C. Ealey-Cross, who voted nay on that item.
Trustee A. Jaycox moved and Trustee R. Rivers seconded an ordinance amending Section 51.02 (Rates for Water and Sewer Services) of the Maywood Village Code relative to the 2015 water service rate. Trustee C. Ealey-Cross asked what the village is doing to address mounting water costs for residents; Acting Manager David Myers said the village has hired a Collections Specialist to address estimated bills. The ordinance passed with Trustees C. Ealey-Cross, A. Jaycox, M. Rogers, M. Lightford and R. Rivers voting aye and Mayor Edwenna Perkins voting no.
The board also heard public comment from several residents and recessed to executive session later in the meeting to discuss village manager candidates. The meeting reconvened later that night and adjourned at 11:26 p.m.
