Coffee County funds volunteer fire departments, approves jail contracts and surplus sales

The Coffee County Commission on Feb. 23 approved a one-time allocation of $5,000 to each of the county's nine volunteer fire departments and authorized several contracts and surplus sales during a routine session in New Brockton.
Chairman Kim Ellis moved the allocation to bridge a gap until the State begins collecting the vape tax in October; Commissioner Clint Grantham seconded the motion, and all seven commissioners voted Aye. The commission's motion specified the payments as a one-time allocation to each of the nine volunteer fire departments in the county.
The move was raised alongside other administrative actions. The commission approved the minutes from its Feb. 9 meeting (motion by Commissioner Al Miller, seconded by Commissioner Jimmy Jones), and authorized the surplus and sale of a 2019 Dodge Caravan to the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office for $6,000 and a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado to Enterprise Rescue for $26,000 (motion by Commissioner Jim Thompson, seconded by Commissioner Sonny Moore). Each of those motions carried with all commissioners voting Aye.
The commission also renewed participation in the ACCA Liability Self Fund (LSIF) for a three-year term after a motion by Commissioner Jimmy Jones and second by Chairman Ellis. Commissioners approved a jail maintenance contract with Icotech for $98,658 (motion by Commissioner Jim Thompson, second by Commissioner Al Miller) and an annual service contract for jail locks for $13,400 (motion by Chairman Ellis, second by Commissioner Joey Powell). The body additionally authorized the surplus and sale of vehicles and equipment at the March 2026 JM Wood Auction at a 6% commission rate (motion by Commissioner Jim Thompson, second by Commissioner Sonny Moore). All votes were recorded as Aye.
James Brown, E911 Director, thanked the commission for the VFD allocation and provided an update on funds the department had received from the State 911 Board.
The commission adjourned and set its next meeting for March 9, 2026.
