County clarifies animal-shelter billing for court-ordered boarding; sets post-10-day rate at $6 per day

Administration told the Board that the Calhoun Animal Shelters agreement did not clearly specify terms for court-ordered boarding and Corporation Counsel concluded a clarification was required. After meetings with administration, the Sheriffs Department, the Prosecutors Office, the Treasurers Office and the Shelter, parties agreed on clarified billing terms.
Administrative Services Director Bradley Wilcox reported that following ten days of holding court-ordered animals the Shelter may bill the county at $6 per day. The shelter will be compensated for court-ordered boarding provided in July and August at $12 per day; July/August invoices totaling $16,800 had already been paid. The shelter agreed to waive their request for court-ordered boarding charges for September and October, and starting with November the Shelter shall bill at $6 per day for court-ordered animals. The clarification also positions the county to pursue restitution of boarding costs from convicted parties and to address barriers to expediency in resolving animal-abuse cases.
The Board accepted the clarification and directed Administration to pursue related resolutions including restitution and interagency responsibilities for boarding costs.
