Greenville City Council paused its regular business Monday evening to recognize members of the Greenville Police Department for service and lifesaving efforts. Police Chief (speaker 9) presented the 2025 Emergency Communications Operator of the Year award to Erin Keyes and named Sergeant Jason Marion the 2025 Patrol Officer of the Year; Marion retired in December after more than 26 years of service. The chief also awarded a Chief’s Commendation to Officer Carter Ward for performing CPR on a reported 1‑year‑old not breathing on April 9, 2026; the child, now stable, attended the meeting.
"Being selected for this award by your peers is not easy because it shows not only are you good at your job, but you've also earned respect from your coworkers," the chief said, describing the peer‑selection process for the awards. Speaking about Keyes, the chief said, "When things are at their worst, when callers are panicked, when officers need clear and immediate information, Erin is steady, she is composed, and she is reliable." The chief credited Carter Ward’s training and immediate action, and said the child’s survival was likely a result of Ward and other first responders' efforts.
Council members and attendees applauded the recipients. Mayor (speaker 14) and multiple council members congratulated the honorees during administrative remarks, and attendees noted the value of the department’s community presence and training programs. The council then moved on to administrative and committee reports.
