Walker County calls special elections to renew 1.2- and 3.8-mill school taxes; approves polling-place relocations

The Walker County Commission on Feb. 17 voted to call two special elections to seek renewal and continuation of countywide school taxes.
Cane Burnette, representing the Walker County and Jasper City Boards of Education, asked the commission to call a special election to renew a 1.2 mill countywide school tax and separately to renew a 3.8 mill countywide school tax. The commission approved both resolutions unanimously.
The commission also approved two immediate polling-place relocations at the request of the Probate Office. Chief Clerk of Probate Richard Fikes asked the board to move Precinct No. 16 from Empire Church of God to the Empire Community Center and to move Precinct No. 22 from the old Parrish City Hall to the new Parrish City Hall; both relocations were approved unanimously and are effective immediately per the resolutions.
Meeting minutes do not include ballot language, election dates, or fiscal-impact estimates for the tax renewals; those details will be set by the probate office and election officials as the special-election process proceeds. The commission’s approvals were recorded without public debate during the meeting.
The county did not schedule any public hearings on the tax measures during the Feb. 17 meeting.
