Summary
Superintendent Oakwist briefed the board on district highlights including 'idea factory' student projects, film and fine‑arts wins, LCTC student awards, nearly 600 kindergarten registrations and upcoming district events including a July 18 education foundation golf outing.
Superintendent Missus Oakwist presented a district update at the April 20 board meeting, highlighting student work and upcoming events across Livonia Public Schools.
Oakwist described hands‑on learning in school ‘‘idea factories,’’ career technical experiences at the Livonia Career Technical Center, and arts achievements such as a student film that won “best in show” at a regional festival. The superintendent noted the district’s figure‑skating team finished as state runner‑up, Stevenson’s theater program staged a successful production, and LCTC graphic‑design students placed among the top posters in Metro Detroit, with scholarships awarded.
Oakwist also reported early kindergarten registration numbers approaching 600 students for the class of 2039 and reminded families of an upcoming kindergarten night and a May 21 roundup event. She announced district fundraisers and events, including the LPS Education Foundation golf outing on July 18 and the Garfield craft show (with proceeds supporting classroom programs).
On operations, Oakwist described supports for staff including a raffle to grant staff time off covered by administration (excluding bus drivers because of CDL restrictions), and said the district continues to coordinate with the city and partners on programs and facility recognition for student achievements.
The update covered many individual-school highlights—from Cooper and Coolidge elementary activities to Johnson Elementary’s art show and the Livonia Career Technical Center’s student-run projects—and closed with invitations for the public to view committee recordings and the district’s updated board calendar on the district website.
