City to discuss lease amendment after YMCA posts that youth center is effectively closed

Mayor Anthony Wright told council that recent social-media posts from the YMCA indicate the youth center is "effectively closed" except for counseling and housing services for youth. The city's existing lease requires the facility be operated as a youth center, so staff will meet with the local YMCA branch manager to discuss amending the lease to reflect current service levels.
The mayor said the YMCA has been seeking grants and donations and has been unsuccessful in replacing a historic King County grant for some branches; until additional resources are found, the youth center will not operate in its prior form. Council will revisit the lease and related office-space decisions during 2027 budget discussions if the YMCA does not restore youth-center operations.
Staff will return with options for an amended lease or alternative uses for the space and any budget implications for council consideration.
