Athens council clears hangar leases, hears airport layout plan update
Summary
Council authorized a new five-year land hangar lease and approved hangar development on four airport lots; staff said they are negotiating an Airport Layout Plan contract with Garver Engineering.
During its Nov. 24 meeting the Athens City Council approved two airport-related resolutions and heard a project update on the Airport Layout Plan.
Public Works Director Shannon Easley told council a city-owned land hangar (Area 1, Land Hangar #1) had been released back to the city and the Airport Advisory Board recommended a new five-year lease; council authorized the City Manager to execute the lease. Easley also said the advisory board unanimously recommended developing Area 3A, Lots 10–13 to allow construction of new land hangars; council approved that authorization as well.
City Manager Elizabeth Borstad later reported staff are working through the RFQ process for an Airport Layout Plan and are negotiating a contract with Garver Engineering; staff are developing a lengthy scope of work. No final contract was approved at the meeting.
Both hangar-related resolutions passed unanimously. Staff noted further implementation steps (leases, site plans and any construction permitting) will follow the council’s authorization.
