Residents split on proposed school merger; monument and library issues also raised at Catawba County meeting

Lynn Dorfman thanked the commissioners and staff for allowing peaceful protests and public events on county property. Speakers taking positions on a proposed school-merger plan included Robin Martinez and Sherrill Watkins in favor and Kimberly Turk, Betty Lohr, Ida Clough, Phil Heath, Sarah Talbert and Jesse Alden in opposition. Kenyon Kelley spoke against placement of a monument on the grounds of the 1924 courthouse. Lisa Yakovenko spoke about Friends of the Sherrills Ford Library.
Those remarks were delivered during the public-comment portion of the meeting and did not result in immediate board action; the Board received the comments and proceeded with the consent agenda. The meeting also included several proclamations presented to county and partner officials honoring line workers, public health week, public safety telecommunications week and National Library Week.
On procedural matters under the consent agenda the Board adopted a resolution updating the county's list of Map Review Officers to add Diana Gandia (county) and Addyson Ikard (Town of Maiden), a change to be recorded in the Register of Deeds. The Board also approved staff's request to declare Chief Brian Kelly's badge and service weapon surplus so they may be presented to him at a retirement ceremony.
The Board approved the consent agenda unanimously and adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
