Catawba County to donate three surplus 2017 Tahoes to volunteer fire departments

The Catawba County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution April 6 declaring three surplus 2017 Chevrolet Tahoes and donating them to local volunteer fire departments.
Under the request from the Policy & Public Works Subcommittee, the county will transfer a 2017 Tahoe (VIN 1GNLCDEC5HR186809; ~121,653 miles; estimated value $11,500) to Propst Crossroads Fire Department, a 2017 Tahoe (VIN 1GNSKDEC3HR204612; ~124,955 miles; estimated value $11,400) to Bandys Crossroads Fire Department, and a 2017 Tahoe (VIN 1GNLCDEC8HR184097; ~131,985 miles; estimated value $11,000) to Catawba Volunteer Fire Department.
Staff said the donations meet county policy allowing conveyance of surplus personal property to entities carrying out a public purpose and cited N.C.G.S. §160A-279. The departments plan to use the vehicles as quick-response units to reduce wear on larger apparatus and to access roads larger vehicles cannot reach. Staff also noted that selling the vehicles on GovDeals could produce estimated revenue of about $33,900 if the county chose sale instead of donation.
The donation resolution was approved as part of the consent agenda and will be finalized after the required 10-day publication notice.
