Athens council accepts clean audit, cites about nine months of reserves

The Athens City Council unanimously accepted the city's Annual Financial Report and related Single Audit for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2025, after an auditor presented results showing no deficiencies.
Kent Willis of Pattillo, Brown & Hill, L.L.P., who presented the audit to the council, said the city received "a clean opinion on both items with no deficiencies," the highest level of auditor assurance. Willis also told the council the city currently has about nine months of fund balance, a level he characterized as stronger than many comparable cities.
Finance Director Sarah Smith said the audit is prepared in accordance with the City Charter's requirements for an annual audit and thanked department heads for their cooperation in producing the records used by the auditors. "We appreciate the efforts of staff across departments to keep the city on track," Mayor Aaron Smith added.
Councilmember Bryan Barker moved to accept the report; Councilwoman SyTanna Freeman seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
The council's acceptance completes the formal audit review for FY2025. No motions to refer, amend, or withhold acceptance were recorded. The meeting returned to other agenda items following the vote.
