City manager reports vandalism that may sideline Belgrade splash pad for season

City Manager Cardwell told the council city staff discovered intentional damage to the splash pad’s drain and filter components during start-up inspections, which has damaged pump and filtration systems and may keep the facility closed for the remainder of the season.
Cardwell said staff found broken plastic drain-trough pieces inside filters and pumps and that the city will incur repair costs. He also reported a recent incident at a Ryan Glen lift station where cut-up t-shirt rags flushed into the sewer pumps caused pump failures, costing “tens of thousands of dollars” to repair.
Cardwell asked residents to report suspected vandalism to the police nonemergency line and said the police are increasing patrols in park areas. “Our teams are looking at, as quickly as possible, how we can get those back online,” Cardwell said, adding that with only about two weeks left in the regular season it is unlikely the splash pad will reopen this year and that staff will focus on having it ready for next season.
The council discussed public communications; staff said they had posted to Facebook about the damage and will follow up with details once repair timelines and costs are firm.
