Adrian commission adopts FY 2026–27 budget; commissioners voice concern about eliminating parks director role

The Adrian City Commission unanimously approved Resolution R-26-036 on April 20 to adopt the fiscal year 2026–27 budget and general appropriations act. During the discussion commissioners expressed concern that the budget eliminates the parks director position and shifts duties to existing staff.
Commissioners suggested options including a part-time recreation lead, contracting specific marketing tasks, and using the city’s strategic plan and capital budget process to shape long-term parks investments. City Administrator Chad Baugh said the city issued an RFQ on April 15 for a five-year strategic plan that will include parks recommendations and that staff will engage the commission and public during that process.
The motion to adopt the budget was made by Commissioner Roberts and seconded by Commissioner Schwartz; the roll-call vote was unanimous. Commissioners asked staff to look for opportunities to restore or redesign the parks/rec function without creating unsustainable ongoing personnel costs.
