Board moves to pursue resolution declaring municipal property 'ICE-free' after discussion of executive order

The mayor told trustees he could issue an executive order to prohibit the staging of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations on municipal property and asked the board whether they agreed with the policy direction. Trustees and staff discussed enforcement and notification procedures.
University Park's police chief said the department would speak to federal agents, "ascertain their intent," and would notify the village manager and mayor so the village could issue a community alert if officers were on municipal property. The chief also said private property owners (churches, businesses) retain rights to restrict staging on their property.
Several trustees said a board resolution would provide more lasting authority than an executive order and give the village clearer procedures. The board voted to table the proposed executive order and to pursue a resolution declaring municipal property ICE-free to be considered at a subsequent meeting.
Officials said they would draft the resolution language, circulate it to trustees and return the item for ratification.
