Council considers state historical markers; staff proposes Candlewood Bridge option

City Administrator Dennis Carr opened discussion about applying for state historical markers for local sites that include Camp Libby, Hial Pony Farm and the Kenilwood Bridge. Carr said staff was currently intending to pursue a Candlewood Bridge marker timed to installation after repair work and estimated the combined sign and application fee at about $6,000.
Council members urged consulting the Washington Historical Society and the bicentennial committee to ensure accuracy and to surface other candidate sites; Alderperson McIntyre and others said historical-society input would carry weight and help establish rationale (tourism, commemoration) before spending public funds. Alderson Martin emphasized wanting the historical society’s report and communications-expert input to shape where markers are placed.
Councilors asked whether markers would trigger historic-designation restrictions; staff said markers are largely identifier signs and did not expect additional legal restrictions for sites such as Camp Libby, though Kenilwood Bridge is already on the historical registry. Members agreed to get the historical society’s recommendation and to consider timing with other community commemorations.
No vote was taken; staff will solicit the historical society’s input and provide details on any administrative or legal consequences before recommending action to the council.
