The City of Washington’s new communications specialist briefed council on a draft brand guide aimed at creating a consistent city voice, color palette and messaging standards.
The specialist said the work began with research and a workshop and that goals include building a modern, community-driven brand reflecting local values. Proposed elements include a two-tone blue palette with accent orange and green, three candidate taglines ("Our home, your story," "Discover your story here," and "A place to belong"), font recommendations and a plan to send designs to a professional graphic designer. The specialist emphasized that adoption of a logo or tagline used on signage or trucks would require a formal council vote.
Council members praised the effort and urged broader tagline options and community input. Alderson Martin and Alderson McIntyre both stressed the value of keeping recognizable historic cues (the town "head" motif) and asked staff to consider cost and phased implementation for signage and equipment. The specialist noted recent social-media engagement gains tied to the bicentennial work and encouraged council to return font and tagline preferences to staff within weeks so designers can produce mockups.
No policy vote was taken; staff will continue developing the guide and return with design options and an adoption timeline.
